Day 9- Piercings and Tattoos

Currently the only thing I have pierced is my ears with one hole each which I got when I was really young.

In college I got my cartilage pierced on one ear. It never got infected but that one hurt for years! I eventually had to take it out when I started my second real job because it was against the dress code.

The summer between high school and college my 3 best friends and I took a trip to Manhattan, Kansas (where K-State is), and two of them got their tongues pierced and another her belly button. I was a total party pooper and was adamant that I did not want any more piercings. Over the next few weeks my friend Ashley (who had pierced her tongue) relentlessly begged me to come get our belly buttons pierced together. Finally I gave in and said I would go with her and we did it together. It actually didn’t really hurt much and I kept mine until I was 30 (when I had to remove it for surgery). She took hers out a month after we got them pierced.

I do not have any tattoos. I am not really against them, but I also have never had the desire to get one.

Day 7- 10 Favorite Foods

  1.  Is a Starbucks Vanilla Latte a food?  I think yes.
  2. Fresh Green Beans
  3. Seared Ahi Tuna
  4. My mom’s peaches and cream pie
  5.  Ribs (only when my husband makes them or from Oklahoma Joe’s in Kansas City)
  6. Fresh Crab Meat – preferably blue crab (aka Maryland crab) or Dungeness with Old Bay
  7. Baskin Robbins bubble gum ice cream
  8. Filet Mignon
  9. Brie and pears
  10. My grandma’s fried pork chops and fried apples

Whole30 Update- Day 17

We are finally getting a handle on the dishes and prep required to do this plan. Thankfully my energy is way up from the first week and a half so that helps. I would actually say overall my house is more organized than normal (it has a way to go on that), but with more energy I am able to keep up with things like laundry during the week. My husband and stepson both have the habit of covering every single surface in our house with something….keys, papers, toys, books, pretty much anything and everything does not get put away when they are done….it just gets set on my counter/table/dresser. It drives me crazy under normal circumstances but I never have enough energy to actually deal with it Well, now that I am actively trying to keep things in order I am going crazy trying to keep surfaces clear. My other clean surfaces issue is because of the amount of appliances I know use regularly. My food processor, mini food processor, blender, two crock pots, and juicer are getting regular use, making it a total pain to put them back in there not-very-convenient storage places. Unfortunately my kitchen doesn’t have a ton of space to begin with so it just feels like constant clutter. I think I am going to try to find an open metal shelf to put in my nook to house these things for easy access. I have to do something because appliances are taking over all my space!

I made an adjustment to my morning routine to being in more protein over the last week. It’s made a huge difference in feeling full longer during the day. I have still been drinking my lemon water and juicing every morning but the addition of protein has been great.

My husband plays a huge role in what food we make ahead for the week, because as it turns out, he is way pickier than I am! We made a big mistake this week and did two chicken dishes that were fairly similar so I can tell he is losing motivation. We are very different in that I could have the same thing for a few meals in a row, and he needs a lot of variety. He is also way more into condiments than I am so I think this is really been hard for him to adjust. I made him look through like 4 paleo cookbooks last night to see if we could find some compliant recipes to do next week that he would be excited about.

We did manage to start exercising last week. Again he and I approach things differently on this one. I started with run/walk intervals from 2-2/12 miles. The first day I was sore even though it wasn’t a huge work out but I didn’t want to overdo it and not be able to move for a week. It has worked out pretty well and I have been able to do my intervals 5 of the last 6 days. Last night I added some weighted lunches and kettlebell swings at the end which I am feeling today in my legs! My husband decided to just go run as long as he could on Saturday, and then couldn’t move or workout for 3 days.  I asked him if he wanted to intervals with me tonight but he wants to just run again. Silly boys always have to do things the hard way.

I am still having cravings now and then. My biggest one is a Starbucks latte for sure. Last night nachos sounded really great to me too.

During dinner last night we were discussing recipes and my stepson asks “What is Paleo?” We tried our best to explain but he was not getting it so he kept asking if things were paleo, like the pineapple on his plate, or his pizza. Pizza is literally his favorite food in the universe and so he thought about it for a while and pushed his pineapple away (which we told him would be paleo) and told us that he did not like paleo food, it was just way to healthy. He actually eats and loves a lot of the meat that we have been preparing for Whole30 but apparently we cannot tell him that it is paleo now.

Overall things are going really well and it is getting easier. This weekend we are going to a super bowl party so we are going bring some Whole30 chilli. I am a little nervous because the following weekend we have a church small group dinner and I am very afraid there won’t be anything we can eat!

Day 6- Personality Traits I Am Proud Of

This is for sure the hardest one for me so far.  It is sort of like doing my “self evaluation” for my annual review at work (which I am in the middle of now).  Its easy to admit to yourself what you perceive as flaws and what you think your strengths are….but putting that out into the universe for someone else to read! Yikes!

So here it goes….

1.  I am level headed.  I can remain (outwardly) calm in pretty much any situation.  I am pretty logical when it comes to dealing with problems and rarely act on emotion.  It has made me good at dealing with confrontation and stressful situations (especially at work).

2.  I have a big heart.  I always want to help others in any way I can.  Basically if anyone of my friends does something to raise money for a charitable cause (like a 5k for cancer ect) I always donate.  I babysit for friends whenever needed and volunteer at church to work in the nursery.  None of this is because I want any kind of recognition….I just want to do nice things for others.

3.  I am not afraid of change.  When I was 20 I decided to pack up my little 2 door escort and drive to the East Coast and basically start my life over.  I transferred colleges away from all of my friends I had known basically my whole life to experience something new.  It was the best decision I ever made.  Sure I will never forget how alone I felt when I moved into my apartment by myself in the rain and my first experience meeting one of my roommates when she was totally rude to  me (we are now very close friends).  But it prepared me for life.  It prepared me to be able to say YES when I was offered the opportunity to move for my career to San Diego, then Seattle, then LA, and finally Northern California.  I guess as a bonus #4 because of all of this I am very independent and I am very proud of that.  Things have not always been perfect but I have always been able to figure out how to make it work.  I will never forget while on the phone with a close childhood friend of mine, in tears, telling her about the decisions I was dealing with many years ago.  She told me this and I cannot thank her enough, “When you tell me you are going to do something, I always know that it is going to work out.  You are just one of those people who know how to make things work out.”

Day 5- My Guilty Pleasure(s)

I have three.

First would be Starbucks. OMG do I love Starbucks. I would pretty much do anything for a vanilla latte right now.

Second is overpriced athletic wear. I could spend thousands at Athleta and Lululemon.

Third would be spa treatments. I love a good facial and hot stone massage. In fact, it’s been far too long since I’ve had either!

In conclusion…..I have expensive guilty pleasures!

Day 4- Earliest Childhood Memory

This one is pretty tough. I feel like when I have a quick reminder of something it make spark an early memory but off the top of my head is hard!

I remember when I was 5 or 6 being on our friend’s family farm and seeing chickens being butchered. If you haven’t had the pleasure of this experience, they cut off their heads and then proceed to run around headless for a few minutes before they actually die. It’s the reason I am scared to death of live chickens (to this day).

I also have very vague memories of going to Disney World when I was 4. I remember sitting on a bench in Epcot with Figment and he is still my favorite Disney “character.”

Day 3- Rituals

Honestly I suck at rituals. I am getting better now that I don’t travel as much for work so that is a plus. Since starting my new eating regiment I have adopted a few things into my day.

I start the day with warm water and lemon. The health benefits for this are a bit controversial but since I cannot have coffee right now I need something warm in the mornings. It can’t hurt!

Following that I have a green juice and some kind of protein for breakfast.

I don’t have anything really during the day ritual wise, but at bedtime I like to take a quick 10-15 minute soak in the tub before getting ready for bed!

That is pretty much it!

Day 2- 20 Things About Me!

All you never needed/wanted to know about me…..

  1. I have had a driver’s license in 3 states; Kansas, Maryland, and California.
  2. I spent two summers in college working at a summer camp in upstate New York.  Best time ever.
  3. I have only been out of the US twice.  Once to Canada when I was 3, and to Australia on my honeymoon.  I really want to visit Greece next.
  4. I have been to 35 states and the top of my list to visit next is South Carolina.
  5. I love to cook, but really hate the clean-up and dishes part.
  6. The sound of a vacuum stresses me out.
  7. I love to look at and listen to the ocean but will not swim in it.
  8. I am pretty sure I do not own a pair of jeans right now….who needs them when leggings are so much better!
  9. On that note, I will spend 5x more on my weekend “relaxed” clothing than on clothes I actually wear to work.
  10. I wear the same necklace pretty much every day.  It was the first piece of jewelry my husband ever gave me and I absolutely love it.
  11. My favorite color is light green/mint/aqua.
  12. In March of 2012 I shaved my head for St. Baldricks and I was able to raise over $8,000 for children’s cancer research.  It is one of my life’s proudest moments.
  13. My husband and I make it a point to go on one adult weekend together every year.  We have gone to Portland, Las Vegas, San Diego, Lake Tahoe, and this year we are going to Seattle.
  14. I rarely wear make-up.
  15. I am a total wimp in cold weather.  It’s hard to imagine ever moving out of California to a place that has an actual winter.
  16. My dog’s nickname is Noodle. She is a part Dachshund mix and she basically bends in half and hits herself in the face with her tail when she gets excited.
  17. I got married at a ski resort on the North side of Lake Tahoe.
  18.  Even at 32 I love Disney Vacations.  Disney World is totally worth the long flight to Florida because it is WAY better than Disneyland.
  19. I really wish I was better at DIY stuff and crafting.  I really try but there is a 50/50 chance it will be a complete fail.
  20. I am definitely an introvert.

Whole30 Update

Today I am on Whole30 day 10, which means when I go to bed tonight I will be 1/3 the way through.

So far it’s gone pretty well. Day 9 was by far the hardest, because I had to drive a lot of the work day to and from a property that was 3 hours away! I sort of have a routine set on when I drink/eat and since I couldn’t keep to it I ended up with a headache. I was very grumpy when I got home and ended up going to bed at 9! Tomorrow is going to be rough as well as I actually have to fly to Southern California and back for a meeting.

I have made a few really awesome new dishes that were big winners with my husband and stepson also. I have also had a few fails, but not too many so I am happy about that.

I am about half way through reading “It starts with Food” which is a very interesting book if you are into learning about how the body reacts with different types of food.

So far this has been a good experience. I have experienced a few moments of exhaustion but overall I have had more energy than before I started. I have heard that in the 3rd week you start to feel great so I am looking forward to that.  I have had a few cravings for sure.  I actually had to stand in a handmade chocolate shop for over an hour to speak to one of our tenants.  It was torture, especially at the end of the meeting when she offered me some!

I added a probiotic to my supplement routine, which took a few days to take affect but I think it is really helping.   I sort of went lax about taking any supplements through December so I have picked back up on my routine with that as well.

Right after my last post I found out my Crossfit gym was closing. I was getting a great deal there, and paying double what I was is just not in my budget so I have to figure something else out. For the interim I bought a yoga Groupon that will be for 1 month. Hopefully I can start next week.

In other news I got to move into my new office this week! It’s a serious game changer for me to be out of cube space and into my own office. I’ve started decorating but since I am out of the office so much this week I probably won’t really get to it until next week.
